From the Desk of the Athletic Director:

At Hastings Middle School, we believe a dynamic program of athletic opportunities is vital to the total educational development of the student. Athletics function as an integral part of the total curriculum. Young people learn a great deal from their participation in interscholastic athletics. Concepts such as sportsmanship, teamwork, competition, building confidence and self-esteem, and developing a healthy body are all important parts of our athletic program here at Hastings Middle School.

Our athletic program strives to provide an opportunity for all students to explore their interests, improve their skills and have fun.

We encourage all parents to attend our athletic events and acknowledge their child’s hard work. Please keep in mind when you attend that all participants in an athletic event; the players, coaches, and officials are trying to do their very best. We would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and good sportsmanship.

General Information

HMS provides most game equipment and uniforms. The student-athlete must provide practice shirts, shorts, socks, etc. Football players will purchase a jersey from the athletic office, and, in certain instances; the coach will recommend special shoes.

All athletes are required to have a current sports physical exam, completed within the last three years, on file in the athletic director’s office.  If you are new to the district and have had an exam in another town, you can mail, hand deliver, or email ([email protected]) a copy of that physical to the athletic director’s office.  Registration for HMS athletics is done online.  A link to online registration can be found on the Registration tab.

Athletes in grades 6-8 will be charged a $120 fee for each season of participation. The participation fee for fifth graders is $80 per season.  This is paid at registration and is not refundable after 10 days.

Athletes in grades 6-8 are expected to practice/compete 5 days a week.  Fifth graders are on the developmental team and will practice 3 days per week and compete at home events. Participation by fifth graders at away meets is optional.

All students participating in extra-curricular activities must work toward maintaining a passing grade in all classes. Periodically throughout the season, the athlete’s grades will be monitored and the student will be notified if they are failing any of their classes. The student will be given a set amount of time to bring their grade(s) to passing. The purpose of this program is to continue to remind our student-athletes of the importance of achievement in the classroom as well as in the athletic arena.

Competition schedules are available on the Hastings Athletics website.  This website will also provide maps to away venues. If you have questions, please feel free to call Pete McGinnis, Hastings Middle School Athletic Director, at 651- 480-7142 OR Athletic Administrative Assistant, Katie McAlpin at 651-480-7141.
